Banaras Tumse Pehle
Uth Chuka Hota Hai
A solo traveler's dawn journey through the ghats — and the 3-second smile that made it unforgettable
"Some cities sleep. Varanasi doesn't even know what that word means."
Main aapko ek cheez bata deta hoon pehle hi —
Varanasi ke baare mein jo suna tha, padha tha, dekha tha reels mein — woh sab incomplete tha.
Kyunki Banaras ko sirf experience kiya jaata hai. Describe nahi.
Lekin phir bhi — main koshish karta hoon. Isliye ki shayad yeh padhke tumhara bhi mann kare. Wahan jaane ka. Wahan hone ka.
The Lie We Tell Ourselves
Alarm bajne se pehle hi aankh khul gayi thi.
Main bed pe baitha tha — proud. Confident. "Aaj main sabse pehle uthunga. Subah ki pehli kiran dekhne waala sirf main hounga."
Cute thought. Very cute.
Par Banaras ko koi nahi batata ki tumne alarm lagaya hai. Woh tumse pehle uthta hai. Roz. Bina alarm ke. Pichle 3,500 saalon se.
— A truth every first-time visitor learns at the ghatsEk traveler ne sahi kaha tha — "Varanasi the only city on earth that was ancient when Rome was young." Aur main soch raha tha main early hoon.
Assi Ghat: Where I Realized I Was Late
Main Assi Ghat pahuncha around 5:15 AM.
Dark tha. Thandi hawa chal rahi thi. Haath jaib mein the. Mann mein tha — perfect timing.
Par jaise hi ghat ki pehli seedhi pe paanv rakha…
Mujhse pehle.
Main 25 saal ka hoon. In bacchon ne mujhe — bina kuch bole — morning routine sikha di. Discipline sikhayi. Aur humility bhi.
"Discipline is not what you force upon yourself at the alarm. It is what flows through you before the alarm even rings."
— Learned at Assi Ghat, 5:15 AMThe Ganga Aarti Experience: Words Fail Here
Phir Ganga Aarti shuru hui.
Aur bhai…
Kaise describe karun?
Maine try kiya notes likhne ka. Phone nikala. Photo lene laga.
Phir rakh diya.
Kuch moments capture nahi karne chahiye. Unhe sirf jeena chahiye. Camera andar nahi jaata. Aur Banaras tab hi milta hai jab tum phone rakh dete ho.
— Note to self, and to youYahi toh hai Varanasi travel experience ka magic.
Tum kuch karne aate ho. Par Banaras tumhe sirf hona sikha deta hai.
"Varanasi is not a destination. It is a confrontation — with time, with self, with the unbearable lightness of being alive."
— Something the ghats whisper at dawnBoat Ride on Ganga: The Siberian Surprise
Aarti ke baad maine socha — let's take a boat ride on Ganga river.
Best decision of the entire trip. By far.
Subah ki dhund paani pe thi. Fog so thick that ghats were appearing and disappearing like dreams — jaise Banaras khud decide kar raha ho ki tumhe kitna dekhne dena hai.
Boatman chup tha. Oars ka rhythm hi ek conversation tha — splash, pause, splash, pause. Koi background music nahi chahiye tha.
Aur phir —
Siberian birds.
Haan. You read that right.
Russia se aaye hue panchi. Hazaaron kilometre ka safar — crossing mountains, frozen rivers, entire countries, brutal weather — sirf yahan aane ke liye. Sirf Varanasi mein winter spend karne ke liye. Hundreds of them. Flying over my head. Some floating on water calmly, like they owned the river.
Aur main soch raha tha — "Delhi se Banaras door hai."
8 hours ki overnight train journey ke baare mein complain kar raha tha.
Siberian birds. Thousands of kilometers. No Google Maps. No hotel bookings. No complaints. Sirf ek direction — aur bharosa ki wahan pahunch jaayenge.
— Perspective shift on a wooden boat, River GangaWahan baitha socha — if these birds can cross continents for Ganga, meri 6-hour train toh kuch bhi nahi thi.
"Kabhi kabhi nature tumhare sabse bade complaints ka jawab deta hai — bina ek bhi shabd kahe."
— Ganga River, Winter MorningThe Little Girl: A 3-Second Moment That Made My Day
Ab aata hai woh part.
Jo mujhe permanently yaad rahega.
Aarti khatam. Boat ride done. Main ghat pe chal raha tha. Absorbing. Observing. Ek alag hi haalat mein tha — woh haalat jo sirf Banaras de sakta hai.
Tabhi ek chhoti si bachchi dikhi.
Maine dekha. Paas gaya.
"Main le doon?"
Usne meri taraf dekha. Ek second. Phir phone de diya. Woh trust — woh trust jo sirf bacche dete hain strangers ko — completely pure tha.
Maine photo li. Ek achhi waali. Ganga with morning light. Ghats in the mist. Perfect frame.
Phone wapas kiya.
Usne screen dekhi.
Phir meri taraf dekha.
Aur ek smile di.
Bas 3 seconds ki smile thi.
Ek soft sa "Thank you bhaiya."
Na usne mera naam pucha. Na maine uska.
Na photo exchange. Na Instagram follow. Na koi transaction.
Sirf ek pure human moment. Stranger to stranger. Help to gratitude.
Aur woh smile? Woh smile mujhe probably zindagi bhar yaad rahegi.
Jab din ka sabse bada moment pooch te ho mujhse — woh 3 seconds.
Na aarti. Na boat ride. Na Siberian birds.
Woh 3 seconds.
What Banaras Taught Me That Morning
Hum life mein kya dhundhte hain?
Bade moments. Bada trip. Bada plan. Badi achievement.
"Jab woh milestone achieve karunga tab khush hounga." "Jab woh trip karunga tab satisfied hounga." "Jab woh cheez milegi tab life set hai."
We are always, always chasing the next big thing. The next destination. The next level. The next version of ourselves that will finally — finally — feel like enough.
Par kabhi kabhi — ek chhoti bachchi ki smile mein poora din mil jaata hai. Ek random ghat pe khade hokar Ganga dekhne mein poora vacation mil jaata hai. Ek 2-minute aarti mein poora spiritual retreat mil jaata hai.
— The only travel lesson that actually mattersBanaras yehi sikhaata hai shayad.
Ki jo tumhare paas hai — woh abhi — wohi kaafi hai.
"The present moment is the only home that has never left you. Banaras just reminds you to return to it."
— On the ghats of Assi, somewhere between 5 AM and foreverAgar tumhe bhi Varanasi trip plan karna hai — yeh woh tips hain jo koi travel influencer nahi dega, kyunki yeh real hain.
🗓️ Best Time to Visit Varanasi
- October to March — Pleasant weather, perfect for long ghat walks at dawn
- Winter months (Nov–Feb) — Siberian migratory birds bonus. Seriously magical.
- Avoid peak summer — Bahut garmi hoti hai, and the ghats lose their misty charm
🏨 Where to Stay in Varanasi
- Zostel Varanasi — Great community, perfect for solo travelers
- Hostels near Assi Ghat — Budget-friendly, wakes you up with ghat energy
- Old guesthouses in the lanes (galis) — Authentic Banaras experience, slightly chaotic, totally worth it
🔔 Ganga Aarti Timings
- Morning Aarti at Assi Ghat — 5:30–6:00 AM (raw, intimate, less touristy)
- Evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — 6:30–7:00 PM (grand, spectacular, unmissable)
- Pro tip: Reach 30 minutes early for a good spot. No, really.
🚣 Boat Ride on Ganga River
- Best time: Early morning — sunrise over the ghats is otherworldly
- Cost: ₹100–200 per person for shared boat (negotiate gently)
- Duration: 1–2 hours recommended. Don't rush this one.
- Must-see from water: Manikarnika Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, all major ghats in one sweep
🎒 What to Pack
- Warm layers — mornings are genuinely cold in winter
- Comfortable walking shoes — ghat stones are uneven and slippery
- Waterproof bag — boat spray is real
- Leave the fancy camera sometimes — kuch moments phone se zyada important hote hain
You're Late. But You're Exactly Where You Need to Be.
Main 4:45 baje utha tha.
Socha tha sabse pehle hounga.
Banaras already 2 ghante se jaag raha tha. Bachche mantra gaa rahe the. Uncle jhadu laga rahe the. Chai tapri wala chai ubaal raha tha. Siberian birds already river pe the.
Main late tha.
Par shayad — main sahi jagah tha. Sahi waqt pe. Kyunki woh sab sirf late aane waalo ko milta hai jo phir bhi aa jaate hain.
— The real Varanasi lessonYe sirf ek line nahi hai. Ye ek reminder hai.
Ki kuch jagahein tumse badi hain. Ki humility beautiful hai.
Aur ki kabhi kabhi — subah 4:45 baje uthke bhi — tum late ho sakte ho.
Par sahi jagah ho sakte ho.
